Luego de dejar Coal Chamber el vocalista Dez Fafara junto con Evan Pitts deciden formar una banda. Reclutan a los guitarristas Mike Spreitzer y Jeff Kendrick, al bajista Jon Miller y al baterista Jon Boecklin.

De un principio la banda se llamaria Deathride. La alineacion lista la banda decide cambiarle el nombre a DevilDriver porque ese era el nombre que la brujas le daban a las campanas que ellas usaban para manejar el mal cuando ellas invocaban sus hechizos.


En el año 2003 la banda firma por el sello de Roadrunner y graban el disco homónimo. De un principio se piensa que la banda tocaba algun tipo de Metalcore pero con el tiempo se dieron cuenta que es Death Metal Melodico.

El disco tiene los sencillos Nothing's Wrong? y I Could Care Less donde esos temas fueron usados en las series de televisión Headbangers Ball y Uranium. Además la canción Devil's Son fue soundtrack de la serie Scrubs.

Tanto fue el éxito que Bilboard lo coloco 117º. Además la banda se fue de giras en paises como USA, Australia y gran parte de Europa. Hizo giras con bandas como In Flames, Fear Factory, Machine Head y Burning Daylight.


El tema Driving Down the Darkness fue presentado en el 10º episodio de la 6º temporada de Scrubs .
