Slayer fue fundada en 1981 por Jeff Hanneman y Kerry King, luego reclutaron al vocalista de origen chileno Tom Araya y al baterista Dave Lombardo. La banda proviene de Huntington Park , California .

En 1983 graban su primer disco titulado Show Mercy con la discografica Metal Blade Records .
