1989: When Dream And Day United

Dream Theater es una banda de Metal Progresivo fundada en 1985 por los 3 estudiantes de Berklee , su primera alineación era Chris Collins (vocalista) , John Petrucci (guitarrista) , Mike Portnoy (baterista) , John Myung (bajista) y Kevin Moore (teclados) . En 1986 Chris Collins deja la banda por diferencias creativas con los demás miembros siendo reemplazado por Charlie Dominici , quien era mucho mayor y más experimentado que cualquiera en la banda, superó la audición para entrar en el grupo. En el año 1988 deciden firmar un contrato con la discográfica Mechanic Records .

En 1989 lanzan su primer álbum When Dream And Day Unite y el ultimo del vocalista Charlie Dominici ya que en 1991 es reemplazado por James LaBrie, de Winter Rose . El álbum no fue muy bien criticado  y los temas más destacables son A Fortune In Lies , la instrumental The Ytse Jam y Only a Matter of Time .

Disco conceptual que narra una historia acerca de un joven que descubre su pasado, el cuál está relacionado con el amor, asesinato e infidelidad de Victoria Page. Como el nombre puede sugerir,Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory es una secuela que sigue la historia de Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper, una canción del segundo álbum de la banda: Images and Words. Aun así, cuando llamaron Metropolis Pt. 1 a la canción original, no tenían en mente hacer una historia épica dividida en dos partes, pretendía ser simplemente una broma. Solamente tras continuas súplicas y peticiones de los aficionados, empezaron a trabajar en la segunda parte. Ademas este es el album debut del teclista Jordan Rudess.
