1983: Holy Diver

Luego de dejar Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio que también perteneció a Rainbow y Elf,  decide formar su propio proyecto llamado Dio. Para eso recluta al guitarrista Jake E. Lee, también se le adiciona al baterista y compañero en Black Sabbath Vinnie Appice y por último otro viejo conocido, desde Rainbow el bajista Jimmy Bain.


Jake E. Lee sólo graba demos y parte para grabar el disco Bark at the Moon de Ozzy Osbourne, donde su reemplazo estaría entre los irlandeses, el experimentado guitarrista de Thin Lizzy John Sykes o el joven de Sweet Savage Vivian Campbell, donde Ronnie opta por el veintiañero Campbell.


El último en entrar a la banda, después de la grabación del disco, es el teclista de Hughes-Thrall Claude Schnell que entra por la razón que Ronnie no quiere cantar y tocar teclados en sus conciertos.

Su disco sale a la venta ese mismo año, considerado de los mejores discos del Heavy Metal gracias a sus éxitos como Holy Diver, Don't Talk to Strangers, Rainbow in the Dark y Shame on the Night.

Sacred Heart se llama su siguiente disco, al año siguiente los integrantes de la banda participan en el proyecto Hear N' Aid junto con integrantes de bandas como W.A.S.P., Quiet Riot, Queensryche, Dokken y músicos de bandas pertenecientes a Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Night Ranger, Giuffria, Journey y varios más donde también se destaca al guitarrista Yngwie Malmsteen.


El disco tuvo una buena recepción por los medios, Sacred Heart, Rock N' Roll Children y Hungry for Heaven son los éxitos del disco y que más resaltaron.

Disco en vivo de Dio.
Luego del disco el ex Whitesnake, Quiet Riot y Ozzy Osbourne; Rudy Sarzo toma el bajo.
Para el 2007 Dio se vuelve a juntar con los miembros originales de Black Sabbath (a excepción de Ozzy Osbourne) para la compilación The Dio Years, el disco fue lanzado, pero por problemas con los derechos del nombre la banda hace una gira bajo el nombre de Heaven and Hell donde en el 2009 sacan The Devil You Know.


Pero toda esta gran expectación de ver de nuevo a Heaven and Hell (o Black Sabbath) y de ver a Dio terminó cuando lamentablemente hace exactamente un año (16 de Mayo) fallece por un cáncer estomacal , un aviso previo fue el 25 de Noviembre del 2009 donde su esposa Wendy Dio afirmó la noticia de su grave enfermedad, hasta que su fallecimiento ocurrió la fecha ya indicada. Esta noticia ese día nos golpeó muchos a los amantes del Rock y del Metal, tanto como fanáticos y como los mismos artistas, sin duda este gran recorrido demuestra que Dio será recordado por toda la vida.
